Soo this was something I had wanted to try and draw for a while. ;w; Basically symbolic, of how Donald was hurting with a broken heart ever since losing his father when he was younger. He was very close with him. When he met Herne though, his heart gradually started to heal, with Herne filling in a Herne-shaped hole in his heart he didn’t even know he had. He still misses his dad of course and has his moments, but he’s got some extra support now!

THERE’S LOTS OF FEELS HERE ;;w;;

In the middle of a strike.

If you need context, earlier this year, CorridorDigital put out an "AI-made anime," where an AI filter was used to convert live action footage into "animation" (for the record, this is NOT animation. Animation is not a look, it's a process. By this logic, anyone using that Pixar Snapchat face filter is a Pixar animator). They touted themselves as "revolutionizing animation."

They were met with considerable backlash and criticism from the animation community. For one, they were taking frames from the real anime Vampire Hunter D to feed the AI. For another, the video was essentially a proof-of-concept for how "easy" and "inexpensive" it is to reduce animation to an automate-able process.

Well, Corridor did not learn anything, because they released a sequel... In the middle of a strike against the use of AI to replace/exploit/profit off of the labor of workers in the film industry. Corridor assured they hired their own artist to train the AI, but remember that industry discourse like this is interconnected. They may not be stealing art, but any studio that sees this and goes 'wow, it's that easy' will. Corridor's also boasting about AI democratizing animation-making. Now anyone can make animation in their bedroom with nothing but a camera and a free software! Except, anyone could already make animation in their bedroom with nothing but a camera and a free software. I made animation in my bedroom with nothing but a camera and a free stop-motion software when I was 10 years old.

Anyways, work like this is exactly what studios hellbent on exploiting workers want to see. It doesn't matter if it's cool or fun. Remember that AI discourse is currently the frontlines of the labor crisis in the film industry. Corridor putting out this video as "fun education" in the middle of an strike is so incredibly irresponsible and disrespectful.

adulationery

I've gotta ask for clarity because the part "I made animation in my bedroom with nothing but a camera and a free stop-motion software when I was 10 years old" can be read as "animation is already democratized. It should never change" so:

Is your stance that animation should never use AI to get faster, or just not now, not until it's regulated?

I always hear about artists being forced to sacrifice their health to work on comics and animation. The most vivid example that comes to mind is the artist for the manhwa "Roxana" being overworked to the point of having a miscarriage, turning the comic's "Pretty Art That People Scroll Past in Seconds" into a literal blood sacrifice.

With AI, isn't there a chance that could ease up? There are already "artistic" industries willing to run artists ragged to make a buck.

It seems like the relentless, profit-driven parts of the production line should use AI or continue accepting the blood of workers. In an ideal scenario, the usage of AI leads to fewer, better-paid, less exploited artists, focusing on enhancing the creative aspects instead of slaving over each part equally.

Sorry to derail the post a bit, I know the main point is that Corridor Crew is being callous and irresponsible to strikers at the worst possible time, I just… Know that I'm going to see another story go on hiatus again because the artist is in the hospital, so I had to find out what people's viewpoints are.

Totally valid concern. AI does have a place in the industry. For example, Spider-Verse 2 used an AI tool to "draw" lineart on characters. In cases like these, the use of AI was to reduce labor for animators, not outright replace or undermine them. In cases like these, the AI is not putting in creative legwork. Decisions are still made by artists.

AI can be used to ease labor. But that's not what Corridor and techbros and studios are selling in its current unregulated form. That's not the conversation they want to have. They want you to think AI is a everything-in-one catch-all magic tool. They want you to think you can make entire movies and cartoons without any creative input or labor from the people who have studied and practiced the craft for years. And they want consumers to be ok with it because it's easier, cheaper, and faster.

Also, AI is not a solution for the crunch problem. The solution for crunch problem is less crunch, which is exactly what unions are fighting for. We love making art, just not the circumstances we're forced to make it in. We shouldn't have to sacrifice what we love doing for decent pay, realistic deadlines, and better health.

Genuinely just a good man. Wife adopts teenage witch that needs a place to stay in the city? Sure. Even though you got a kid on the way? That’s fine. Cat too? Love cats.

furrama

My favorite moment with him is when he goes to get some prepped baking sheets and he does this fancy twirl with them in front of Jiji. Like, there’s no other people in the room, he does this to impress a cat.

I don’t think he ever says more than a whole word the entire movie, and I still love him more than most Disney princes based on this one moment alone.

And the part where he wanted to surprise Kiki by making that beautiful elaborate sign OUT OF BREAD to advertise her business and he was all anxious for her to get home and see it

But then when he sees her coming he gets all bashful and runs away 😭

the most underrated thing about the ghibli movies is how deeply they are love stories to working people, to the small folk, to moments of love and kindness. its not just about magic, many movies are about magic and fairytales. Its not only about the people in the stories, but about stories in the people. And they are just loveable.
